Bowen Therapy was developed in Australia by the late Tom Bowen and has successfully been used to treat thousands of people including high performance athletes for over 40 years.
Bowen Therapy is exponentially gaining world wide attention for its benefits in both acute and chronic conditions and its wide range of therapeutic applications.
This Original Bowen Technique is a unique and dynamic system of muscle and connective tissue therapy using gentle therapeutic moves. The practitioner performs gentle, yet deliberate moves to the soft tissues of the body to deliver signals to the nervous system at specific locations (on muscles, tendons, ligaments, or nerves). This creates a nervous system biofeedback loop and stimulates the body to respond in its own time, within its vital capacity.
Bowen Therapy is considered as "homeopathy for the body". It challenges the musculoskeletal system, stimulates proper energy flow and flow of chi, releases tissue restrictions, congestions and the resultant inflammatory processes in order to relieve pain and expedite the body’s innate healing responses.
Each set of Bowen moves incorporates small pauses in between each set of moves to allow the nervous system to relay the appropriate neurological impulses through the central nervous system so that the body can process and respond appropriately to the Bowen biofeedback loop created. Sometimes called the homeopathy of bodywork, Bowen utilizes subtle inputs to the body (known as moves), stimulating the body's innate capacity to heal itself, often profoundly.
The Bowen Technique addresses the entire body, by restoring balance via the autonomic nervous system (ANS). This portion of the nervous system, the ANS, controls over 80% of bodily functions and is highly susceptible to external stressors. High stress levels can over-stimulate the sympathetic ANS and engage the fight, flight or freeze mode. For deep healing to occur, we must shift the nervous system from a highly stressed sympathetic response to a parasympathetic dominant state. This is the state in which the nervous system allows the organism to rest, relax and switch into repair mode.
Bowen Technique enables this healing shift in the nervous system. This shift can often reactivate a salled healing response or help the client break through the plateau in their healing process.
It is a remarkable therapy that assists the body in re-patterning old injuries and misalignments, re-balancing the organs and meridian systems and re-programming the patterns imbued in the matrix of fascia and connective tissues in which ailments reside.
Bowen Philosophy & Biochemistry
Bowen Therapy works on The Living Matrix. The living matrix is the largest and most pervasive organ-system in the human body. It connects with the tendons, ligaments, the myofascial cartilage, fascia and “all that is included in the concept of the living matrix.” – Excerpts from James L. Oschman, PhD on Bowen Therapy at the Winchester Conference.
The application of the hands with a therapeutic touch produces an electromagnetic impulse through the tissues and induces a related reflex arc into the central nervous system releasing important molecules called “Integrins” which link the cellular matrix with the extracellular matrix and with all of the connective tissues. This is the level at which Bowen Therapy exerts its effects.
The Bowen moves are performed over major acupuncture points and meridians stimulating the flow of “qi”, over the Golgi apparatus of the muscle bellies, over major neuro-lymphatic and neuro-vascular bundles and moves from the peripheral to the central nervous system back to the local areas with an immediate biofeedback response.
The theory and role of amplification applies here where small inputs of energy create large effects. The calcium channel becomes the amplifier, where one photon of energy triggers the entry of thousands of calcium ions. It can be compared to homeopathy for the body, where a fine tuning rebalancing of the body harmonics, according to the Pythagoras’ theory of vibrational medicine can rebalance the resonance of an organ as it aligns to the frequencies of the chakras in which they reside.
The Mechanisms & Biomechanics Behind the Actions
There are many principles to the application of Bowen Therapy. It is both an art as well as a science. Dr. Cheryl D’Costa, BPHE, ND, R.Ac is both a Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine as well as a skilled Advanced Bowen Practitioner and she has been in practice for over 10 years.
Understanding the anatomy, physiology, biochemistry and biomechanics of the body from both an Eastern & Western perspective can provide you with incredible results.
The Bowen Technique removes the obstacles and opens the channels so cellular communication can occur allowing the body to remember its innate healing intelligence. The gentle yet powerful technique sends electrical impulses deep into the nervous system and reminds the body of it's normal state of bio-energetic balance and homeostasis.
Often times, the body will begin to unwind it’s injury patterns and release the trauma or cellular memories stored within the tissues.
Autonomic Nervous System Rebalancing
The autonomic nervous system controls over 80% of the body’s functions including the cardiovascular, respiratory, peripheral circulatory, reproductive, endocrine and gastrointestinal systems. The ANS is a highly innervated system and is therefore highly susceptible to stressors of both a physical or emotional nature and responds to discord in a number of ways. For the healing process to occur, the body must shift from a heightened sympathetic state (fight, flight or freeze response) to a state of parasympathetic neurovegetative dominance (healing state). Bowen facilitates this parasympathetic shift, allowing the body to unwind and digest the release of physical and emotional stressors to be processed out. These changes occur in accordance with Herring’s Law (a homeopathic principle).
Acupuncture Points and Meridians
Bowen stimulates the flow of “chi” to mobilize and release stagnation and energetic blocks. Many Bowen moves are performed along key acupuncture points and meridians known to stimulate and rebalance the body.
Fascia
The fascia is the living matrix of connective tissue that connects everything in the body: muscles, bones, internal organs and the nervous system. This matrix plays a major role in muscle coordination, flexibility, postural alignment, proprioception and the overall structural and functional integrity of the body as a whole. Bowen moves breakdown tissue adhesions and frees the network of fascial restrictions as they relate to the matrix of nerves, muscles, tendons and tissues being addressed.
Joint Proprioreceptors
All Bowen moves performed around a joint directly and indirectly affect the joint, ligaments, and proprioreceptors that sense and adjust the body’s spatial, tensile and postural positions.
Lymphatic & Vascular Circulation
Bowen therapy stimulates the removal of stagnation & inflammation by mobilizing both lymphatic and vascular circulation and drainage as some Bowen moves are performed over key neuro-lymphatic and neuro-vascular bundles throughout the body.
Photon Induction
Bioenergetic impulses stimulate photon induction which shift the cells into a right spin in which they are able to return to a proper right rotational spin allowing the necessary cellular nutritional uptake and release of stored intracellular toxins into the extracellular matrix for removal via the lymphatic and circulatory systems.
This allows for proper cellular communication throughout the tissue matrix and a gentle detoxification process to unfold for faster recovery times and pain reduction.
Spinal Reflexes
Many of the Bowen moves are performed along the spinal centers and create an improved flow from the central to the peripheral nervous system & vice versa (afferent & efferent neural impulses). Not only can these moves alter distal organ functions, they are also situated along key Acupuncture Back Shu Points and have corresponding end organ balancing effects.
Stretch Reflex & Proper Muscle Spindle Firing
Most Bowen moves are done either at the origin, insertion or belly of the muscles, where the Golgi Nerve Bundle and Spindle fibre nerve receptors are located. These receptors inform the nervous system via neural biofeedback as to the tension, length (contraction or stretch) in the muscles and tendons. Bowen corrections allow for proper muscle fibre alignment, contraction and relaxation, proper muscle fibre recruitment and muscle firing sequencing for accelerated healing and performance to occur.
